Tyke (1974 – August 20, 1994) was an African bush elephant from Mozambique who, shortly after birth, was captured and sold to Circus International of Honolulu, Hawaii.

During a performance on August 20, 1994, after nearly 20 years in captivity, Tyke trampled and killed her trainer. She then charged out of the arena and onto the streets. A nearby police officer fired multiple shots in the direction of the elephant causing her to flee. During a 30-minute chase through the streets of Honolulu, local police officers fired 86 shots into the 8,000-pound elephant. Eventually, Tyke collapsed from her numerous wounds and died.

Today, Tyke is known internationally as a symbol of circus tragedy and the continuing fight for animal rights. For us, she is a reminder of the courage it takes to choose a life of freedom over a life of captivity.
